When the tooth is damaged or is infected, root canal treatment may help save it.

Root canal therapy (RCT) is a procedure whereby the nerve inside the tooth is removed and the canals are cleaned, sterilised and sealed with filling materials to prevent further infection.

The treatment usually takes 2 to 3 appointments depending on how complex the tooth is. After RCT, the tooth is brittle and is more prone to fracture, therefore requiring a crown to protect the tooth.

The treated and restored tooth can last a lifetime with proper care. Good oral hygiene and regular dental examinations are necessary to prevent further problems.
